Riga, Latvia
August 2004

One of the boys from Sprīdītis with a Bangor City shirt

25 members of Gôl! took the beautiful game, not to mention a sackful of sports gear, to a children’s home in Latvia for Wales friendly match in Riga in August.

60 children live in the ‘Sprīdītis’ home in the village of Kemeri on the Baltic coast and the Wales supporters took shoes, shirts and shorts to the boys and girls and also bought the home a much-needed computer and printer as well as the usual goodies of sweets, pens and badges.

While the director of the home, Kristinana Andresone, and her staff were pleased to receive the computer, the children were far more interested in the shirts, cuddly toys and sweets we had brought over from Wales for them. The girls were not forgotten either with make-up kits and shirts especially for them.

We had arranged for 40 boys and girls to come to the international match the following night and it was great to see them turn up at the Skonto stadium proudly wearing the colours of Millwall, Bangor, Newport County and Cardiff City!

All the supporters who visited the home In Latvia were touched by the gratitude of the children and staff, and guess what? Wales won 2-0!
